Circular breathing is, as slap tongue, a technique that requires practising different steps. Each step might take days or weeks to cover. So be patient. To really control all aspects, you might have to count several months.

I believe that above all, it is the musician who makes the sound. The condition is that you need good material, but nowadays there exist many good instruments and belongings such as reeds. Once you have that, it is up to you (us) to adapt to that material and get a good sound out of it.
Not in my opinion. There exist mouthpieces with a non-classic sound, but I personally use (good) classical material. I do the rest.
